Sonography Schools Offer Advanced Studies

Author: Michael Bustamante

Sonography Schools, colleges, and universities teach the use of high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce active visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. Sonography, or Ultrasonography, techniques allow for dynamic ultrasound images to be recorded on videotape, photographed, or electronically transmitted to physicians for immediate diagnosis.

Sonography universities and colleges award associate and bachelor degrees. Associate and bachelor degree programs in sonography provide students with skills for entry-level positions as diagnostic medical sonographers. Courses of study will include biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and physics. Four-year bachelor degree programs will round out the educational experience with the required liberal arts courses. Additional courses in sonography curriculums will include studies of sonographic physics and instrumentations, gray scale, and color-flow Doppler sonography.

Advanced studies for certificates and diplomas are often choices made by practicing medical personnel, who wish to specialize in areas of sonography to change or advance their careers, or increase their earning potential. Sonography specialties include obstetric and gynecologic, abdominal, ophthalmologic, cardiovascular sonography, as well as neurosonography.

Courses designed for entry-level positions will involve patient interaction, preparing patient histories, using ultrasound equipment, assisting physicians in diagnoses, and working as a professional team member in sonography, diagnosis, and healthcare.

A sonographer's responsibilities may be broad and varied. Not only must a sonographer master techniques of sonography, X- ray, mammography, and magnetic resonance images, they may also be responsible for evaluating equipment purchases, adjustments to and maintenance of equipment, keeping patient records, preparing work schedules, and managing diagnostic imaging departments.

Sonography is used as an alternative to radiology, and, as it is a safer method of imaging, its use is increasing dramatically. The need for ultrasonographers is growing more rapidly than most occupations.
